While working as a police detective for the City of Indianapolis and raising four sons, he put money into savings every week toward his goal. Finally, in 1959, Ed was able to open a small store in Southport, “Gerdt Bedding Brokers” and specialized in mattresses. As customers began asking for different items, Mr. Gerdt broadened the inventory by adding case goods. Gerdt Furniture & Interiors was born! Ed was the sole salesperson, while sons, George and John, made the deliveries. Ed’s wife, Ethelynne, took a correspondence course in Interior Design and became the stores’ “design staff”.

Don's Home Furniture has been a long time in the making. For over 20 years we have continued to grow into a very sizeable independent furniture store. When it all began back in 1986, the little 1800 square foot store on Madison's south east side was called Don's Collection of Reproductions. Back then we carried mostly oak furniture that was new, but made to look like the antiques of the early 1900's. We were so small back then that when a customer came into the store we actually had to walk away from them just so we could stay out of their way while they looked around.........

98 years of Rubin's Furniture! That's a very long time. Almost a century ago, my grandfather, Ben Rubin came to Madison, Wisconsin from Russia and opened the very first Rubin's Furniture. Ben's two sons, Isadore Rubin and David Rubin were the 2nd generation of Rubins. In 1932 Isadore and David opened Badger Furniture, a modest store in downtown Madison. During my childhood I often helped my father, Isadore to shovel coal into the furnace on cold winter Sunday mornings. In high-school I worked part-time on the delivery truck and I helped unpack new furniture in the warehouse. During my college years, I graduated to the "floor" and began my sales career.

The Paul Weise Furniture Company. Located on the corner of Farwell and Albion Streets on Milwaukee’s East Side, it presently occupies the same site that it was founded on 1886. Through the years the original building has been expanded and modernized, yet its sense of historic importance and the prestige of housing one of the area’s finest furniture establishments. The business, founded by Paul Weise, was originally a cabinet making shop and upholstery firm.
