Gerdt Furniture and Interiors

Forty-seven years ago, Gerdt Furniture & Interiors was the dream of Edward Gerdt. While working as a police detective for the City of Indianapolis and raising four sons, he put money into savings every week toward his goal. Finally, in 1959, Ed was able to open a small store in Southport, “Gerdt Bedding Brokers” and specialized in mattresses. As customers began asking for different items, Mr. Gerdt broadened the inventory by adding case goods. Gerdt Furniture & Interiors was born! Ed was the sole salesperson, while sons, George and John, made the deliveries. Ed’s wife, Ethelynne, took a correspondence course in Interior Design and became the stores’ “design staff”.
